1. Detroit faces stiff competition from Japanese, German, Italian and other foreign
automobile industries. With its automobile industry no longer having a monopoly
in the world market, Detroit has diversified into other industries like agricultural
machinery, weaponry, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and computer peripherals. The
Renaissance Centre, opened in 1977, has given a new face to Detroit, making the
riverfront a hub of cultural activities.
2. Ahmedabad enjoys a number of advantages for the cotton textile industry but at
the same time it faces certain challenges. Some of the mills use obsolete machinery
and outdated technology, which leads to industrial sickness. There is competition
from synthetic fibres, which are more durable and cheaper.
3. Silicon Valley is the name given to the semi-conductor industry around Palo Alto,
California. The area referred to as Silicon Valley is located in Northern California, on the San Francisco Peninsula, around Stanford University. A huge capital
base, technically skilled personnel, power facilities, governmental support and a
pleasant climate have favoured the growth of the IT industry in the Silicon Valley.

1. Jamshedpur has the following advantages for the development of the iron and steel
industry because of its geographical location.
• Iron ore is obtained from the mining areas of Singhbhum in Jharkhand and
Mayurbhanj in Odisha.
• Good quality coking coal comes from Jharia and Raniganj.
• Manganese comes from Kendujhar in Orissa.
• Limestome and dolomite come from Sundergarh in Odisha.
• The rivers Subarnarekha and Kharkai supply water which is required in large
quantities.
• Cheap and abundant labour is supplied by the densely populated states of
Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.
